The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum presents an exhibition on the work and collections of Moroccan and Japanese ceramics from the 17th century by the Swiss painter Helmut Federle, placed in dialogue with the Museum's Islamic art ceramics, either in the permanent exhibition space of the Islamic Art Gallery , as in the Lower Floor Gallery.
This exhibition, which runs from June 9 to September 18, 2017, includes fourteen paintings selected by the Artist himself, in close collaboration with the Museum's curators, and around thirty ceramics from both collections.
The main attention of this exhibition is focused on the way in which the Safavid ceramics from the Founder's Collection, and the Moroccan and Japanese ceramics from the collection of Helmut Federle, all from the 17th century, dialogue with each other, but also the way in which they relate to their production. contemporary art, all permeated by a general sense of abstraction. Helmut Federle's dual status as an artist and collector is equally addressed, both in the exhibition and in the publication that accompanies it.—
